FINE Champagne Magazine No. 7 is out!

Friday, June 10th, 2011

In the new issue FINE Champagne nominates the first ever Champagne Personality. Our unanimous vote went to Richard Geoffroy, the guardian and cellar master of Dom Pérignon! Read his story in full in the magazine.

Find also my article and Richard Juhlin’s column about the shipwrecked champagne treasure, the nearly 180-year-old champagne found in the depths of the Baltic Sea that reached a world-record price at the recent champagne auction in Åland.

Could you imagine drinking champagne up in the treetops? If yes, find my article about Perchingbar – a champagne bar built up in the trees!

Celebration Champagne article leads us to the all-time wedding champagne – Dom Pérignon 1961, which was the choice of Charles and Diana in 1981.

Fine Champagne is starting to publish extracts from my new champagne book – Matka Champagneen (Discovering Champagne), you can find the first extract about what to do and see in the city of Reims in this issue!

Les Crayères – Classic Quality

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

This traditional and ambient Les Crayères restaurant in Reims recently changed Chef de Cuisine from Didier Elena to Philippe Mille. I am yet to explore the cuisine of the new chef, but that should change in the next week or two.  There are two options, the fine dining experience of Le Parc and the Brasserie Le Jardin. The cellar book is a champagne lover’s bible.

The hotel is the finest in the region if not in the whole of France. It used to belong to the Pommery champagne family. The traditional and luxurious environment is peaceful and cosy. Rest assured the staff will cater for all your needs, as there are 80 people working for the 20 room hotel!

Hotel de la Paix: Urban with a Cool Champagne Bar

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The newly renovated Hotel de la Paix is a great value location in the heart of Reims. The modernized rooms are spacious and stylish. But the best part of the hotel is the downstairs champagne bar. Populated everyday by both Champenois and foreigners, it is a lively spot to enjoy the aperitif bubbles. In the summer, the inside courtyard terrace has the best atmosphere for enjoying the champagnes.

A tiny super casual restaurant on the av. Jean-Jaurès. The stepson of Jean-Hervé Chiquet of Jacquesson, Antoine. runs this place that has a lovely list of terroir wines from all around France including many single vineyard champagnes as well as grower rarities.

Open both for lunch and dinner. No website.

Café du Palais

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Another pleasant lunch only bistrot oasis in Reims centre, run with a relaxed touch by the Vogt family. A Reims institution from the 1930s. Good selection of wines by the glass and half bottles too. Cristal at 135 €/ bottle is worth knowing.

Lovely small restaurant that has an intimate atmosphere and flexible, friendly service. The carefully prepared fine cuisine with an oriental touch is a refreshing alternative amongst the traditional French restaurants.

L’Assiette Champenois – The Rising Star

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The famed L’Assiette Champenois became my favorite restaurant in the region already on my first visit. The modern, warm ambience and the spacious terrace create a suitable atmosphere for the fine tuned cuisine that has great purity of flavours and a subtle international touch. The young chef Arnaud Lallement has already gained two Michelin stars for the restaurant. Most recommendable!
