Venissa – Lagoon of Vineyards and a Top Restaurant & Hotel

Monday, May 10th, 2010

The island of Mazzorbo, a short sea fare away from Venice, hosts a very special property, the Venissa. It is a brand new venture of the Bisol Prosecco family, who won a tender by the city of Venice to revive the old island property of Venissa. After lengthy studies, the Bisols revived Venetian viticulture by re-introducing the ancient Dorona variety on the island in an idea to make a top quality Venetian wine. The wine is not yet launched but the hotel and restaurant were opened for public in May 2010. The six rooms of the hotel are charming but the real joy of the visit is the Venissa Restaurant, where the famous chef Paola Budel cooks local delicacies.

Klaus K – First Design Hotel in Town

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The centrally located Klaus K was the first design hotel in town. The rooms are small yet individual. The best parts of the hotel are however the restaurants and bars attached to it. The Toscanini is a busy casual Italian place whereas the popular Ahjo night club has a good selection of interesting wines.

Borchardt

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

A great relaxed Italian style venture favoured by celebrities and high society. Service is impeccable as is the food. All goodies available from lobster to a fabulous steak tartar. I don’t know whether it is custom for them to take out the labels from the bottles you’ve had and stick them on to papers for a souvenier or a remainder. At least we got that treatment. Looking back from the labels, we enjoyed Italian wines from Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2005 to Avignonesi Vino Nobile de Montepulciano 2004 alongside some German rarities. Highly recommendable in its atmosphere, service, food and wine.

Kuurna

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Lovely small bohemian restaurant that offers simple but supertasty Finnish food. The two young owners Antto Melasniemi and Heikki Purhonen have really created something unique to the Finnish food scene. The inspiration to the name comes from the old brilliant Mika Waltari Palmu detective novel’s villain Kurt Kuurna. Always busy so remember to make a reservation.

Grotesk: Not so Grotesk

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The restaurant and bar in the old Helsingin Sanomat newspaper headquarter has gotten its name from the font ‘grotesk’ they used. Ambitious venture by Tommi and Teemu of Demo to offer Demo quality in larger volumes and more accessible pricing. The quality is not quite up to Demo’s one star kitchen but great value in any case. Modern with an ambient busy atmosphere. The lively courtyard terrace is a great place for a drink. When it gets chilly, you should move inside to enjoy some of the best cocktails in town. Bellini from fresh peaches and Pol Roger is fantastic!

Chez Dominique: National Treasure

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Chez Dominique with its two Michelin stars is a national treasure. Top chef Hans Välimäki moved the restaurant successfully to new, larger but super stylish quarters. Finest dining in town. The visual side of the food is half the meal there, as much effort is put to the perfect decoration. Top sommeliers add a great finishing touch.

Ateljé Finne

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Ateljé FinneThis traditional Töölö restaurant was recently purchased by Antto Melasniemi and Heikki Purhonen of Restaurant Kuurna. Quality is as great as we have learned to expect from these fellows. Great bonus is the wine loving Italian waiter Daniele.

Willi’s Wine Bar

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

This is an ambient bistrot restaurant for wine lovers, and especially Rhône wine lovers. White Burgundy is very well represented as well. The simple but very tasty food is highly affordable (3 course menu 34 €). Also, here the mark-ups for wines will not hinder you from making great explorations.
