Wine and View: The FINE Wine Bar at the Airport

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Finally, there is a great way of killing time at Helsinki Airport! In fact, it is reason to get to the airport half an hour before usual. The newly launched FINE Wine Bar is a unique concept, made in cooperation with the FINE-magazines. It is the place to taste the 1000 finest wines ever made, selected and published as a book by the Editorial Team of FINE.

In addition to tasting the normal wine bar selection, made by Juha Lihtonen of FINE, you can taste everyday a selection of fine and mature wines by the glass. The rare wines are sourced from the best cellars in the world by Pekka Nuikki. You can experience for example Petrus 1975, Chambertin 1961 and Vintage Port from 1864.

The FINE Wine Bar is open every day 06:00-20:00 at Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport.

Château Pétrus Mg 1975, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France 90p/2005

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The first bottle, actually a magnum, enjoyed was an incredibly generous gift from Pekka Nuikki to me and my dear friend for our birthdays in 2005. The second time I tasted the wine was at the recently opened FINE wine bar at the Helsinki Airport. Based on this wine’s reputation, I have been slightly disappointed by both of my encounters with it. It is rich and muscular with well-rounded tannins and a smooth texture. However, it has seemed to me a bit disturbed lacking a clear focus and finesse. There is however a lot of fruit left to last for a long time still.

I was lucky to have another Pétrus 1975 encounter in May 2008 at a prestigious 20 vintage Pétrus tasting. The third time was up to the first bottle’s level and 90 points. Bright red berry fruitiness, tobacco, licorice and a touch of volatility. Thick with some fair amount of tannin left. Lacks the backbone and elegance of the best vintages. No hurry though.
